Fishing Tournament

Forty-four members of the Lide White Memorial Boys & Girls Club again joined up with members of the Chelsea Bassmasters Fishing Club for the 23rd annual fishing tournament Saturday on the Ohio River.

More than 80 fish were caught and weighed-in at more than 221 pounds including white perch, small-mouth bass, stripped bass, channel catfish, and other assorted species.

Winners of the fishing competition included Dalton Sizemore (6- to 8-year-old division) who hauled in 29 pounds, 7 ounces and landed the Big Fish, a 10 pound, 1 ounce white perch. Chris Hayes (9- to 10-year-old division) pulled in 9 pounds, 2 ounces, and Caylee Dempler (11- to 15-year-old division) wrestled in 10 pounds, 2 ounces of fish.

This year's event proved extra special for the children as normally only 30 members get to fish. But thanks to the combining of the Chelsea Bassmasters with the Madison Bassmasters Fishing Clubs, they were able to expand this year's event to a total of 44 children getting to participate.

Another special situation surrounding this year's event included Trey Taylor, an 11-year-old with multiple birth defects syndrome and intractable epilepsy, and his brother, Jacob Taylor, joining this special annual event. The Boys & Girls Club and the Chelsea Bassmasters are trying to help raise funds for the "4 Paws for Ability" program to assist Trey with getting a service dog to help Trey become more independent with the specially trained dog.

This year's event was dedicated to Greg Cloud, who lost his life fighting a house fire on Nov. 1, 2006. Mindy Cloud, Greg's widow, participated and was on the camera boat throughout the event and helped raise some of the funds and secure some of the prizes awarded to the children at this year's event.

The children launched with their fishing buddies at the Madison boat ramp around 8 a.m. and fished from the Indian-Kentuck Creek to Corn Creek, about a 10-mile section of the Ohio River until 11:30 a.m. The children and the Bassmasters then returned to the Boys & Girls Club for lunch and the awards program. Each child was presented with a backpack, a rod and reel, a tackle box, and fishing gear, with the winners being awarded plaques. The Chelsea Bassmasters also presented a check to the Club for $3,421 to assist the Club with its operational expenses.

Top four fishing results were: Group A (6 to 8 year olds) - 1. Dalton Sizemore, 29 lbs. 7 ounces; 2. Logan Kent, 25 pounds, 13 ounces; 3. Brooklyn Anderson, 18 lbs. 4 oz.; 4, Brian Galliher, 10 lbs. 12 oz. Group B (9 to 10 year olds) - 1. Chris Hayes, 9 lbs. 2 oz.; 2. Eli Kent, 7 lbs. 12 oz.; 3. Ariel Galliher, 5 lbs. 3 oz.; 4. Nick Macon and Cheyenne Gayheart, 4 lbs. each. Group C (11 to 15 year olds) - 1. Caylee Dempler, 10 lbs. 2 oz.; 2. Jacob Taylor, 9 lbs. 3 oz.; 3. Tessa Gibson, 7 lbs. 9 oz.; 4. Corianne Guadagnoli (6 lbs. 7 oz.).
